I will soon have a plasma tv but I have some worries?
Question:
--How long does it take for an image to freeze?, cause we play games quite a bit.
--Is there a way to get these ghost images off the screen?
Also, seeing as it's an hdtv, I know a majority of the channels are in in hd so I will have to assume that the sides of the screen will have black bars on them (I can only assume).
--will these black bars freeze on my screen?
--Is there an option (I assume there might be) to stretch the image to fit the whole screen?

I guess my queries sound basic to most, but understand that I am mildly tech-dumb so any help I can get would be great help.
Graci.
Answer:
Newer plasmas do not have the burn-in problem. They have something called pixels shifting that will prevent it.
As far as the black bars on the side, I have my HD plasma set to "FULL" so the picture will take up the whole screen. I assume your TV will have the same option. I believe all plasmas have this option.
Do you realize these TV's only last 4-6 yrs and then need to be replaced?
Mine is a LG set,no problem.
You're right - these are pretty basic - Plasma screens have a tendency to 'memorize' patterns.. this is the equivalent of burn in on old CRTs. Plasma's are notorious for it.
How long it takes is totally dependent on how you use the TV... if you play games (full screen), watch movies (full screen and old fashioned ratio), it should take years for a burn in to occur.
If you use the plasma for one thing only, over and over, the burn in can take only months.
Regardless, enjoy...

Check out this site it should answer a lot of your questions...I just bought a 42" Panasonic plasma and I love it! No problems so far. Fyi Panasonic's plasmas last up to 60,000 hours which is like over 20 years. I believe Phillips does as well.

I would not play games on a plasma, most games have something that is constantly on the screen, no matter moves you take on the joystick. It will burn in those images, the length of time is really something that would vary from one to one.
Most of the newer ones should have the ghost problem resolved.
For the black bars, you can set your TV to stretch the non-HD channels, so should not be a problem. And it is really easy to change settings, just follow the onscreen menu.
I really have to say that plasma still has the problem of a relatively short life span and really high costs to fix problems. You should check out the LCD or DLP projector screens, they would work much better for a gamer. 42” is actually not that big of a difference in price between LCD and Plasma.
Check out DLPs instead. They don't have any of these problems, have a much sharper picture and cost less.
