Toshiba big screen -blurry video, but HD channels work fine?

I have a Toshiba 50" big screen model 50h12. My problem is the video is really blurry on all standard definition channels, I have been told it is a "christmas tree effect". But the video works fine when watching a HD channel. The audio works fine on all channels. The problem is consistant with all video imputs. I have my DVD player hooked up to a HD video imput, with HD cabels, but the video is still blurry. The only channels that come in clear are the HD channels form my cable box. Can any body help? The nearest repair center is 70 miles from my house, I would really like to try and fix this problem myself.

You have a projection TV.
Two things may be happening
a) It is time to change the light bulb in your TV. In most projection TVs the bulb goes to half brightness at about 1000 hours. So, if you have it for 1-2 years, this may be the time.
b) You may have a misalignment/convergence problem which is more apparent in Standard def. Check the system menu if there is an option to recalibrate red/gree/blue convergence
Something could be wrong with your cable box.
This is a common complaint. Remember that you're taking a low-res SD signal and spreading it over a gigantic screen. How far are you sitting away from the TV. Maybe you're too close.
Another possible problem is that your cable provider is degrading the hell out of the SD channels in order to cram all that HD bandwith down the wire. I KNOW this is a problem with SD local channels on satellite. They look like crap, as if everyone on the screen has had massive botox injections.
