If I have directv do I need a seperate HD reciever to see HD channels on an HDTV?

Question:
I am about to purchase a flat screen tv and was told by the salesman that even if I buy an HDTV I would have to buy a seperate HD reciever to view HD channels. I have a Directv box, won't that work in place of an HD reciever?

Answer:
If you want to receive HD programming from DirecTV, you have to have a HD receiver from DirecTV. There are two types: the H20, which is a receiver only, and the HR20 which is also a DVR (like a TiVo). This also includes a different kind of dish, which has to be professionally installed. You "buy" those from DirecTV, but you don't own them (they are leased to you). With that you will be able to get basic HDTV (if you subscribe to HBO, you will get the HBO HD channel, same with Showtime) with no additional monthly fee. If you want more HD programming, they offer an HD package (includes HDnet, ESPN-HD, DiscoveryHD) for about $12/mo.
My parents have an Hd tv and also have direct tv. They had to get a different dish. It is one that has the three heads on in rather than just the one. I don't know about a different reciever, their reciever is built into the tv.
Yes, although you would be able to pick up over-the-air HD signals from your local channels carrying the networks with an HDTV antenna. That IS if you have a hdtv built-in (tuner) in your tv. Otherwise, get a HD reciever from directv. I'm sure they even have HD dvr's also since that's what I use from time warner cable.
I have a couple of HDTVs and subscribe to Directv. I have had HD receivers for both. I now have an HD Directv receiver that allows me to get the local HD channels and all other HD channels that are offered. I also have a Directv HD DVR. There is an extra cost to get the HD channels. In the near future (later this year) Directv is supposed to have more HD channels available.
No. You really do need an HD receiver to receive the HD channels. Directv will also have to install an all new HD satellite at your house.
