Why do people say a set top cable box is necessary to get HD TV?

Question:
In addition to over 120 regular channels I get about 2 dozen HD channels on my Olevia 542i (42" LCD) with no converter box. Is this unusual?

Answer:
You are extremely lucky!
It appears your cable company sends out unscrambled signals so for you, no cable box is necessary. This is not the case in many areas which is why a cable box is needed.
There is a difference in "getting the channels" and "getting the channels in HD". I get them also, but they are not in HD.
.
I would say you must have HD cable fed straight to the television that requires no cable box. Our cable Co. requires us to use their HD/Digital cable box. Most channels are digital, with 24 HD ones. I use a Monster
HDMI to DVI cable to go from the TV to the cable box. This gives me a good resolution on both formats , due to the interface in the HDMI cable.
If it's broadcast in HD then yes, you will recieve the HD channels on over the air cable. Coax will recieve HD just as well as a component cable or HDMI.
