Will watching video in 4:3 ratio ruin my LCD TV?
Question:
I am new to hi definition.
I have a few questions.
first off I didn't realize since I switched I'd still be watching regular non hi def channels most of the time.
While watching regular channels in 4:3 mode, will that cause a burn in on the screen? I've read different things on this, Panasonic says that LCD's don't actually burn in but they get "image retention" which is not permanent.
Samsung, says it can be permanent and advise you to stretch your picture with the zoom function if you are going to be watching for more than 2 hrs.
I really don't like zooming the picture as it scews it a little, but If I have to do that I will.
Also I see even on the hi def channels I still get black bars on a lot of the content. Do I Have to stretch on those channels too??
Also my cable box allows me to switch between 720P and 1080i which one should I use?
Answer:
That is correct LCD's do not suffer from the burn in that phosphor coated screens do. The image retention that panasonic is talking about doesn't really matter for you since your viewing the images at a aspect ratio of 4:3 and the sides are most likely letter boxed black. Therefore there is no activity on those sections of the screen to exhibit image retention. Some cable boxes have a feature in there menu for widescreen tv's that might help you. The resolution that the tv is on doesn't affect the likely hood of image retention either. The safest thing to do is every so often run the image on full screen to prevent any possible but remote chances of image retention.
more is better.1080i yes.
black borders will not cause any effect on the lcd. essentially no signal in those areas, so the lcd pixels stay off.
sometimes borders are not black,,,if you can select the color chose black. But as others have said - lcds are not phosphors - so they should be unaffected,,,
