How to tell if tv dish is working.?

Question:

purchased new dish on ebay. can't pickup any satelites.it just says its searching. ebay warned that the products from the company i bought from, maybe substandard. how do you know if all the componets are present or if its working properly?

Answer:
The dish itself is not likely to be the problem - unless it has been warped in transit. it is the electronics - either the LNB (the thing at the focal point of the dish, the cabling linking it to the receiver OR the receiver.

If you have a friend nearby with satellite, you could ask if you could take around your receiver and see if that works - if it works fine, then the fault is going to be your cabling (connection), the LNB or - simply - where the dish is aiming,.

If the receiver does not work there, then it ight suggest that the LNB / dish alignment and cable are fine - but the receiver isnot at all well.
