What is the difference between direct tv and satellite dish?

Question:

Answer:
Direct TV is a specific brand and service.

Satellite dish is just a generic term.

Another service is Dish TV

Good luck, sorting all that out.
A "dish" is a microwave antenna.
its one in the same, you need a satelite dish on your house to get direct tv
its the same thing. direct tv is a satellite dish company
DirecTV is a satellite service using a proprietary set-up including a small dish (about 2-3 ft diameter) pointed at the DirecTV satellites. Brings in standard and premium channels at a fee through DirecTV service.

The satellite dish you may be referring to is the big one you've probably seen (6ft & larger in diameter) that can be pointed at several satellites in geosynch orbit. Not sure what type of content you can get these days or if it's all scrambled, but I remember my uncle (30 years ago) being able to get everything including raw network news feeds. For pay channels (like HBO) you can buy/rent a descrambler.

The DirecTV dish is pointed once during set-up and never needs to move. The big satellite dishes are typically on a motorized swivel and can be pointed at the satellite of your choice.
