Direct TV's HD access worth the extra money?

Question:
I'am debating on weather to get the HD access from direct tv. I already have the HDTV. I know we need the HD receiver and satillite and antenna also. I'am wondering if it is worth the extra money? With the package we have with direct tv now they told me we would only get 4HD channels and the locals. I'm not sure if that is worth it. We have a package that we have had for years and it's no longer available, one of the lower costing ones. We would like to keep it because the next package up from it now would cost us 72.00 a month with HD access they said it would have 7 HD channel, but we dont want to pay that much. I dont understand why we only would get 4 HD channels with the package we already have, when the HD access for 9.99 on the web site shows 7 or so channels. If there is anyone who has direct tv HD access let me know what you think.

Answer:
Directv may have 100 to 150 hd channels before the end of this year. Call them - you may get a free upgrade to your system.
NO! But i do have some HOT STINKY GAS TONIGHT! Whew its terrible! Anybody want a dutch oven?
What you should do first is try hooking up some "rabbit ears" to your HDTV to see what local HD channels you already get for FREE.

We get over 30 HD channels for free off an antenna...Click this link for some more "HDTV Truths": http://www.whydoesmyhometheatersuck.com/...

You might find you don't need to purchase anything...We didn't...But if you find out you like those free HD pictures on your TV set, then you might want some "PREMIUM" satellite channels, too.
It depends what you like to watch. It also depends if the programs you watch are available in HD. I have the package and like it very much. I like watching sports, nature shows, & local channels in HD. I have the HBO package also and it comes with one channel in HD. So I get movies and HBO boxing in HD. In my opinion the extra $9.99 a month is well worth it. Once you watch HDTV it's hard to go back to regular TV.
Hello Mary K,

I'm sorry, that I'm no expert on Direct TV. In my area (near Portland, Oregon) DirectTV has been advertising that there is work done to create over 100 new HD channels. I've also heard that same 100 new HD channel numbers mentioned in the newspaper scheduled for September. So, although DirectTV may not have as much to offer now, there should be some great HD coming in just a few months.

Also, I've noticed that satellite systems are all over the map as far as their plans (sort of like the mobile phone industry). There are constant new deals being offered. I'm not sure if you can change the cost of your contracted plan, perhaps if you kept calling the people who put this in and asking them what sort of deals they can give you.

I've found that I was talking to a Direct TV customer service representative in India, so I'm not sure what they can really do for you.

You might want to ask your local cable provider what sort of HD they provide in your area, just to get an idea what alternatives are available. You might be able to use that as something to tell the Direct TV folks while you're talking them down a little bit.

Best of luck to you.
