Question regarding HDTV and HD Channels recieved through Directtv?

Question:
I have a HDTV and Satelite service through DirectTV but do not have thier HD Service. I noticed alot of the channels I get though like NFL & NBA games, the National Gegraphics channel & ESPN at times have shows broadcast in HD. My question is if my Directtv box is connected to my HDTV by a S-Video output, I'm I really getting a HD quality picture when watching shows that are being broadcast in HD on these channels. I know its a HDTV but if my source isnt connected by an output that supports HD am I getting a HD picture? Will me HDTV convert the signal recieved to a HD picture? i'm really confused as you all can tell! I searched on the back of my box for a output that would support HD (HDMI, DVI, etc...) but S-Video was the best output available for my converter. Any help on this would be appreciated!! Thanks

Answer:
no man check this out- you need an HD receiver to receive HD programming. the receiver is able to "translate" the HD images and broadcast them to your HDTV. without the special HD receiver you will not receive ANY HD programming. Also, you will be missing out on much of what HD has to offer if you simply use an s-video cable. invest the money and buy HDMI cable. HDMI will give you the best possible picture as well as providing sound.
you may also need a new satellite dish that is able to receive HD signal. if your current dish has only 1 arm (or LNB), you will need a dish with 3-lnb or 5-lnb capabilities. directv should install all of this equipment at little or no cost to you. the programming charge is $11/month. hope this helped!
