Building a new system, need power supply help.?

Question:
Howdy,
I'm planning on building a new pc here shortly for normal use, media, some light gaming, etc;my specs so far:

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ 2.4 Ghz (socket 939)
Asus A8N-VM motherboard
2 gigs DDR-400 in dual channel
160 GB HD
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1550 512MB GDDR2 PCI-E
18x DVD burner
I still haven't picked out a case, but a normal mid-ATX is what I had in mind.
Anyway, something that still confuses me are power supplies. I really don't quite know what kind of wattage is going to be needed . For this system,I would like a PSU that gets the job done and can handle upgrades ( stronger video card most likely) later on. What do you guys recomend? 300 watt? 400? 500?
If I'm allowed to ask this, what specfic brands/models would you recomend? I've seen quite a few higher watt models for really cheap, but they've got crummy reviews. I don't want to spend too much, but I don't what something that gives out in a few months either.
Thanks!

Answer:
OK for that, anywhere fomr 500-650 watts should be fine.( I say this because the high end cards reccommend at least 400watts [8800gts] and you want some head room) That said Brands like antec, pc power and cooling, and especially Thermaltake have good reputations for power supplies. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH that skimping on a power supply is a bad idea. They are one of the most volatile parts in a computer. Now, you should buy one with Active PFC, and look for one with more than one rail, most thermaltake have 4 rails, and alot of antec have 3 or 4. rails split the load the psu has to carry, up, so that your psu doesnt have to stress so hard.
For this system, a 400 watt power supply is sufficient, but if you plan on an upgrade then you need to go with a 500w or 600w. Below is a great deal from Tiger Direct.

at least a 400 watt... make sure u get the right one, some cheapy brands go out real fast. i'v heard raidmax goes out in like 1 - 2 months
hay power supply doesnot mater , where ever you in this world the power you get to ur house is 240v not more then that it depents on your periphals you use to ur PC .like for gaming perpose u should use good grafic card, and so beter u use 3ghz processor rather than 2.4
Generally speaking the more wattage you have, the better it will run. It TOTALLY depends on the brand though. My b'friend is using a 600watt no name and it is ****. We recommend an Ultra, X2 550watt supply or a Thermaltake 500 watt or more. This will be the optimal choice for what you have and your computer needs.
Cheers!
I can recommend you to buy a case WITH power supply from VANTEC,ZALMAN,ENERMAX.
They have a professional solution to your problem.
Now,for your system you need a minimum of 400WATS power supply. When you choose the power supply, specify that you need a REAL 400W on your system.

Best regard and good luck!
My guess is it will require a 600 watt PS.

Your video card draws 30 amps at 12 volts.
30amps x 12 volts = 360 watts for the video card alone
The 12 volt supply must power the video card plus all the other cards.

The power requirement for the video card will determine the power supply you need. Your power supply probably must supply 33-40 amps at 12 volts to meet the needs of the video card and all the other cards.

Don't assume it will put out 33-40 amps at 12 volts. You must read the power supply specs.
You can't get a power supply that's too powerful. Over-Voltage and Surge-Protection are important also. I would go with at least 400 watts.
