School shootings--whether students should attend public schools or not?

Question:
The Virginia Tech Massacre is probably one of the deadliest school shootings ever in history, other than the school shooting in texas back in 1966. However, I've been going online and reading that there have been approximatly 42 school shootings all across the United states, and about 20 or more school shootings all across the globe. There even was a school massacre in Franklin County, Pennsylvania (Enoch Brown School) around July 26, 1764. Yes, each and every school does encounter on fire drills, lock downs, building security drills, and has made extremely strict rules of bringing in guns, weapons, or illegal substances like marijuana. But as my belief, parents are so concern for their safety that they rather home school them or take them to private schools which cost a fortune. Even though it's the law to have children in school, would home-schooling be an answer to keep parents worried free about their child's safety?

Answer:
You have pretty much covered all the reasons I choose to home school my students. Plus, they are getting a great education safe at home. My kids will be dual enrolling in a community college in 11th grade, so i will be facing some of those issues, but at least I will have given a firm foundation on which to stand.
Just wanted to point out, in the United states, home schooling is a legal option to sending a child to school.
Oh sure why not. How about Claymore mines and electrical fences around your property to keep "THEM" out as well. Don't you think a practical answer would a bit more useful?
No not really because if they were to stay home if both parents work one will have to quit there job and lower their income. Then they could no take care of the child.
The law is to make sure children are educated, not to be IN a school. Check out www.HSLDA.org to see the actual law for your state.

Safety is a huge issue these days, it might encourage a lot of parents to look at the HSing option. Once they do I am sure they will find there are several other reasons to homeschool.

HSing is not for every kid and certainly is not for every parent. You need to do what is right for your family. Good luck!

ADDITION:
We are in no way RICH. Actually no body I know is. Homeschooling is not for the wealthy, it is for everyone. It is as expensive as you make it. There are several resourses out there that are quite affordable and many that are free.
One place to start, is have the media STOP hyping up the fact that "it's the worst shooting yet".that puts ideas in the twisted minds to just want to beat the numbers. Home schooling is hard to achieve if both parents have to work, like most need to do in today's society. Mostly it would be the rich who could afford the homeschooling, and the middle and lower class families would have no choice but to send their children off to school. The world is going to hell, and we don't need this kind of terrorism in our country. The troubled kids causing these threats and attacks need to be identified and evaluated before something does down. I am sure at one time a red flag was raised with the past students who murdered fellow classmates, then themselves.
Certainly it would be one solution. But it's impossible to be completely worry-free. You could have a car accident. You could have someone break into your house. Other things could happen.

Homeschooling should only be undertaken by parents who are committed to giving their children a good education and environment in which to grow up. If it's simply to keep them from being shot in school (which is probably less likely than dying in a car crash), then it's probably not a good idea.
It's one of the reasons I chose to homeschool my children. Our local elementary school is not safe. All of the middle schools in my area have on duty police officers strolling the halls. Most of the high schools do as well. I'd rather not put my children through that if I don't have to. And to address the posts about two income families and quitting jobs, that's exactly what I did, and we're better off for it. Sure, we took a dip in income. BUT it wasn't that much of a dip because 1) we're no longer paying for daycare. 2) we're no longer keeping 2 cars constantly in gas. I only have to put gas in my car once every couple of weeks since I no longer commute. 3) we're no longer spending money on work clothes for 2 people. 4) we're no longer paying for lunches for 2 people. 5) We pay less taxes because our income is less. It all works out in the end. Once you account for all the spending TO work, you realize it's better worth it to stay home and raise your kids. At least that's how it was for my family.

VT was not probably one of the deadliest shootings in US history, it is. Twice as many people lost their lives in that shooting that did in the UT shooting in 66.
It is not a law to have children in school.
It is required that children between certain ages receive instruction.
there is a difference there.
And no. homeschooling does not produce a "worry free" environment for parents.
That is what parents do.
They worry. If it's not shootings, it is something else.
Although people that do not understand homeschooling think we homeschool to control our children, the fact remains that they are their own people. There are many many things we cannot control about our children, or life in general.
That is why parents worry about their children.
It's natural.
It should not consume you and make you paranoid, you should use that natural tendency to bring about good.
It's not a law that children are in school - at least not a B&M school. Homeschooling (considered private schools in many states) is legal in all 50 states.

I don't HS my son b/c I'm scared of his safety. I HS for many other reasons.

Even sitting at home we could be struck by a stray drive-by shooting bullet (although hopefully not in our neighborhood), an airplane crashing into our home, a robber busting in, or a tornado coming through. Just b/c kids are at home doesn't make them safe.
you are more likely to die in the car on your way to school than a shooting!.. that's like being afraid to fly right after a plane crash.. The media hypes you up and makes you scared, you are more likely to die on the car ride to the airport than on the plane!
Safety is only one the issues that made me choose homeschooling. My kids were not getting a good education in public schools. My kids spent more time trying to protect themselves siting in the classroom than they did learning academic subjects. Thank heavens home schooling is legal.
That is exactly why many people do homeschool!

That and for religious reasons
Public school or homeschooling, both these places can be dangerous. A home can be broken into, burn down, carbon mixoide poisioning, public school has flaws also, security, no place is safe. Its better to face reality than hiding from it, it can happen everywhere.

If a person really wanted to do harm to a school, especially a student, they would know about the fire drill procedures and others.

The point is, carry on with your life, people can't stay scared forever, you have to face reality, after 9/11 what happened the next day, we carried on with work and school. When the airlines reopened, we continued to fly. After Columbine, we continued with school and work, after Virginia Tech we continue with school and work.
