What official connection does the D. of Defense have with Public Schools?

have you noticed DoD sponsored events that are on Dod Websites like the "freedom walk" were pushed out to public schools and young kids indoctrinated and given a history lesson (while much contended) about 9/11? Are you aware local military units will "sponsor" a local public school and send troops to interact and mentor your child quite frequently?

What does the Dept. of Education have to do with the Dept. of Defense? Aside from raising kids conditionally like young military academy with recent behavioral grading and conditioning, what is the benefit of our children for 'no child left behind and unrecruited? If poor grades, no scholarship, and few options but to join military for cash benefit and 100% tuition?
