Have people forgotten how to spell?

Question:
It really annoys me to see people who write questions like "I lik dis gurl" I mean come on what is it is with people. Did our public school systems forget to teach children how to spell or what??

I'm a homeschooling mom and I admit I am an awful speller. I but I love how I can easily use spell check on my emails or even when writing a message online. Have people forgotten about that??

Answer:
Unfortunately some people use deliberate misspellings of words like some people use regional dialects or accents. At the same time, (forgive me for this) but if you're talking about someone that's not smart enough to spell "like" "this" or "girl" then they probably aren't bright enough to find the spell-check button.

I agree with you, though, it's just not that difficult to use proper spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Especially in the case of people who are deliberately spelling these words incorrectly. To me it seems like it would be more work to intentionally spell things incorrectly than it would be to just do it the right way the first time.
I dedd not phorgett
I FEEL THE SAME WAY! It's very annoying!
These idiots never learned how to begin with!
Yess thhey havee!
People can't be bothered to do those things because they feel that the internet is an immediate and instant method of communication and that because of that they are able to type in gibberish!
ppl don't want to waste time to check spelin
i think that people are just lazy...they think it is a lot easier but it really isn't
ppl just write lyk that to shorten it
eye fink sew!!
no, people have not forgotten about that at all. They know HOW to spell, but they just don't want to...especially teenagers who think they are cool & want to right like that.
i doth reful
I understand where you're coming from, sometimes you have to sit back and decode an entire paragraph of gobbledygook.
well when people gotta rush and do things quickly then it's the easy way out. I admit I don't use the spell checker on e-mails on the other hand on YA I do. I guess even when my Friends and I chat on YM we barely use proper words. For example OK would be k no capitals at the front of a sentence stuff like that.
No i think a lot of it is the kids, and as well as others chat on there cellular phones. Which in case are only allowed so many letters in there message box and it has been transfered around. Look in to it thats not all of the reason but a small part!
I bet you are a better homeschool teacher then the once in School. I totally agree, I hate reading those questions cause they waste my time, i have to read them over and over again to finally understand them. thanks for reading.
P.S. English is my 4th Language, so don't count my spelling mistakes.
They are just retarded and think it is cool to type like that.
People spell like that because it's a quicker way to spell things and maybe they're in a hurry! Like instead of writing OK you can write kk because it's quicker and don't think all people that type in a fast a "sloppy" way don't know how to spell like when I'm Instant Messing people i always type like that so i an respond quicker!!
No, they're just too lazy, and think it's kewl, lol. Kids now a days are always taking the easy way out. Words like, dis and cuz and others are just used because they're shorter. If they learned how to type they'd realize how easily it is to spell correctly, and find all the keys! LoL

But I do agree, I've met a few people online, and it just drives me nuts how improper their English, and grammar can be!

Wow, and just by clicking spell check, I realized I've been spelling grammer wrong my whole life. LoL
It's what you get when you have idiots teaching idiots! It's also one of the reasons why America is sinking like a lead fart!
Just another way to rebel against the system. Don't worry, when they get a real job, they'll have to know how to spell, or at least use spell check, or else they won't have any decent job for long.
No, but truly it shouldn't matter as long as you understand them in my opinion. I often wonder why people seem so anal. It doesn't appear to be anything large to my way of thinking.
Yur gramurs not up to much either, is it?
yes, they have. people have gotten lazy about spelling. some people just can't spell period and some people can't type. i use spell check when i think i need to.
i agree, but its called slang.
Do as I do. When some one is to lazy, or stupid to spell a question correctly, just don't answer it.
"The public school system" says it all. Thank you NEA. Too worried about teaching multi-culturalism, global warming, and conflict resolution to spend time with spelling (or math, or proper english). I guess it's also just too difficult to hit the "Check Spelling" button.

Congratulations on your homeschooling. We'll probably see your kids at a future national math competition.
I agree with you that is rather annoying that some people don't take advantage of spell check. Some people purposely misspell words though, either to stand out, or because it's faster. Unfortunately all you can do is set a good example by using good grammar and spell check.
It certainly takes me more time to type like that than spell normally. Maybe its because I was quite good at catching my spelling mistakes in elementary/middle school years.
I feel the same as you.

HOWEVER, I'm just as prone to use 'u instead of 'you' or 'ppl' instead of 'people' ...DEPENDING upon my "audience" and where in the web I am. I mostly [only] use abreviations during IMs or in fast-moving message boards.

In e-mails and forums (like this one) I do use spell check, if available, OR I open Word and use the spell check in there to double check spelling of words I'm not sure of. I do make typos, though, at times that I don't catch in time.

I don't think the youngsters you're talking about were taught in PUBLIC schools proper spelling to begin with! After all, WHY are YOU a "homeschooler"???

Look up "Literacy Rate" on the web and see what you come up with. ;)

On another note, I ran into this in one of the forums I go to:

" "We Win" ! "We Win" !

Story: AT&T revises privacy policy

The European Commission has just
announced an agreement whereby English will be the
official language of the European Union rather than
German, which was the other possibility. As part of
the negotiations, the British Government conceded
that English spelling had some room for improvement
and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would
become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c".
Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump
with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of
"k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards
kan have one less letter. There will be growing
publik enthusiasm.

In the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will
be replaced with "f". This will make words like
fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new
spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where
more komplikated changes are possible.

Government will enkourage the removal of double
letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate
speling. Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of> the silent
"e" in the languag is disgrasful and it
should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps
such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with
"v".
During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd
from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer,
ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no
mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi
tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil
finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German
like zey vunted in zeforst plas.

If zis mad you smil, pleas pas on to oza pepl" "

I think that came from the forums in cnet.com, I'm not sure. At first, I didn't think anything of that except that it was funny. THEN I saw a TV commercial using it! That commercial wasn't run for long. I wonder [sarcasm]_WHY_[/sarcasm].

BTW: Spell check doesn't do anything for PUNCTUATION mistakes, does it? And the one in here sucks because it won't check real long posts like this one!
