In the late 90's I was a consultant specializing in Vantive CRM. Things have changed since then, but I think I still have a bit of a handle on it.
Vantive was bought by Peoplesoft, and the CRM suite was converted over to the Peoplesoft architecture a little over a year later.
Back in the day when I was doing work for Vantive, our major competitor seemed to me to be Clarify. They are still in the biz.
There is also software by Siebel.
Which software you use will be heavily driven by how many users you need to support.
