My thoughts are that you'd miss out significantly on the interaction and 'informal' side of education in your college course if you go online - a big part of your experience! But it can be a much more cost-effective method of obtaining credentials while working or keeping up your family obligations. End of the day, if you have the ability to do so, go to college 'live', but if online is your best alternative, check with your college of choice to determine how you can interact with your classmates while studying online, and if you like what you hear, go for it!
