Can people with Down Syndrome go to college?
Question:
I had a teacher - that didn't understand my disability - Higher-Functioning Autism, but only specialized in severe Autism, although, she really didn't understand Autism, in general. Anyway, I told her, I gave a child with Down Syndrome a hug, and she told me "Oh..that's okay. He's mentally retarded." That hurt my feelings - because I have a brother that's mentally handicapped, and I didn't like it, the way she said it. I didn't believe he was retarded - although, he was slow in some aspects, I still loved and cares about him. Most recently, I've met a person online, with Down Syndrome on MYSPACE.com, and they've impressed me ALOT. I couldn't believe this one adult, with Down Syndrome, wrote a profile, all by himself, as I think. But, anyway...this makes me curious... I don't know much about Down Syndrome...but my main question here is:
Can people with Down Syndrome go to college?
PLEASE - no mean comments! SERIOUSLY!
Answer:
Depending on the severity of their condition yes.
Sure. There are degrees of downs. Some kids have very light cases where they are fuctional and can even give speeches.
There are special schools for postsecondary education for folks with some issues like down's syndrome. It might be called "college" but is likely a special place. What a person can do depends on what they can do...
Possibly, depends on the level of reading ability and the courses they want to take
didn't bush go to harvard. ok he didn't get a law degree but he did an mba which isn't bad.
Yes, they can. Down Syndrome is not a handicap, per say. It is a physical handicap. They can be smarter than any of us and usually do go on to become Doctors and Lawyers!
College is big business. They'll take anyone with enough money.
My sister in law did...she has the disorder, yet she is very inteligent, and she is getting married. so they can live like most everyone if the problems are not serious.
Sure
Everybody can go to school, it does not matter what mental, academic, or talented state you are in. Each school specialized in different areas and have to accommodate all different types of needs and behaviors.
My brother has Autism and it is SUCH a misunderstood disorder, as well as other developmental disorders. Many people don't realize that most developmental disorders (including Down Syndrome and Autism) are considered spectrum disorders, which means that there isn't one type of person with it. Therefore there is high-functioning, moderate, and severe. So to answer your question, yes, people with Down Syndrome can go to college, have careers, get married, and have families. It may not be at the level of someone without a disorder, but its possible.
P.S. A couple of notables in history with Asperger's syndrome ( milder form of Autism) that have been truly successful: Albert Einstein and Bill Gates
I Dont See Why Not. You Can Do Anything Any Body Else Can Do. I Have A Siezure Disorder And Ive Been To Collage And Do Anything Any Body Else Can Do. That Is Discrimanation- GOD BLESS
Sure my sister has downs and she went to collage and now she has a degree in child pyscology, and is doing quit well for her self. She does specialize in children with downs. because the have a harder time on dealing fwith normal people. And me personaly I have no problems with any "spiceal needs people" because I think they are just as human as I am.

I like your thinking and caring consideration for others! Good like with your future ventures! Sarah P.S. Have any of you seen the commercial where the child with Down Syndrome says "I can do ANYTHING!" it is true they really can as well as all disabled people! With love, support, treatment, and effort!
