Is 1024mb memory really necessary for a college student taking online courses, or is 512mb enough?

Question:
Also, is an 80gb hard drive enough or should I get a 100gb hard drive?

Answer:
Maybe because of the online courses the 1024 MB migth be not necessary but preferable. The point is that internet chats and that kind of tools uses a lot of RAM memory, and if you add to a low RAM the usual problems with the internet transference rate that migth cause your tools to run slowly.
AAbout the 80 or 100 GB of hard drive, if the diference is not significant go for the 100 GB, you are gonna realize that you can have a lot of information in it, like books, documents, and sometimes music or videos or photos.
If you are definitely decided not to store music, videos or photos the 80 GB will be more than enougth i guess.
depending on what youre doing and what kind of online classes youre taking. 1024mb would never hurt but certainly you could save some money and go with the 80 gb hard drive instead of the 100 gb
512MB is plenty, in fact 256MB is plenty and 80GB hard drive is also plenty, but if you can get an 100-120GB hard drive for less than £20 extra then you may as well do so! You only need a really big hard drive when you are doing video editing, or rip a lot of DVD's to your hard drive!! Good luck God bless!
Depends on what you are using your pc for. The 80Gb hard drive should be fine as long as you are not going to fill it with music or films, as for the ram 512MB would be slower then 1024mb so as long as you can live with the waiting there is no need to upgrade. But if you want to play online games and such i would suggest you get atleast 1Gb of ram.
It really depends what you are studying and the type of software you are using other than Microsoft Office.

If you are using a graphic application like Adobe illustrator, Photoshop CS2, than 1024Mb RAM is a good choice. the more ram the faster your computer. That is more important than 100Gb HDD ( Hard Drive) or a faster Processor. Do not buy a computer with Intel Pentium Celeron processor, as they cache is too low and you certainly will need that 1Gb RAM just to get some reasonable speed out of it.

If you are using windows XP for reasonable work experience you should have at least 512Mb RAM.
80g hard drive and 512mg memory should be enouph at least it is for me in the past 2 years.
no Don't waste your money for that you can do that works with this one
No, it's not necessary. Anyone who says it is, is trying to sell you something.

Doing on-line stuff doesn't need much memory at all. It will work just fine on even 256 megs of ram and a 20 gig hard drive.
