Online Career Schools and Colleges?

Question:
I was wondering if colleges such as Startford Career Institute Penn Foster, AIU, and University of Pheonix worth real. I see the ads on TV for them all the time and they also show up in my email. I was thinking of attending one of them, but I wasn't sure if they were real or just scam.

Answer:
Some of these schools are OK. They aren't quite as good as standard colleges because they are more business oriented. They just want to get people paying tuition, and they aren't as concerned about the quality. But some really ARE concerned about quality. I know that before the University of Phoenix hires instructors, they have to go through five weeks of training. Many other colleges don't require that.

I do, however, recommend doing research about these schools. Find out who they are accredited by. If they are accredited by the same organizations that accredit colleges you already know of or trust, then they are probably OK.

You also might want to consider checking out your local state schools and seeing if they have online programs. The community college I teach at offers a bunch of classes online.

Good luck to you!
