Torn between 2 majors! Help plz!?
Question:
The Accounting Program in the college I attend offers an AAS degree and an AS degree
The Business Administration is an AS degree
Answer:
IMHO accounting is the more marketable degree of the two. Bus. admin. is sort of a general purpose degree, accounting has specific uses and needs in the business world. It really boils down to what you enjoy and what you are best at. You also want to look into the transferability of the classes you are taking at the community college. Good luck.
If you genuinely enjoy accounting, I would recommend that degree because you can get a job in any industry with an accounting degree once you pass the CPA (certified public accountant) test. Every industry needs an accountant. If you work as an auditor at one of the big 4 firms (Ernst & young, kpmg, price waterhouse coopers, or deloitte & touche) the hours are long but you can make anywhere btwn 50-80K after you receive your bachelor's degree.
A business degree on the other hand is more generalized and you can go into a variety of fields. IF you work in finance which is based on a lot of accounting principles, you can work as an investment banker and earn upwards of 100K a year including bonuses. Working in commercial banking has much less hours and pays btwn 50-70K entry level. Other high paying fields in business are in consulting but they usually require an MBA and start in the high 80K entry level.
Good luck and from personal experience, do what you love and the money will come with time.
I think it is really smart to consider the availability of jobs and how much they pay when you consider your major. If you like them both, I'd choose the one with what seems to be a better financial future. Choosing a major that won't prepare you for a good career is a recipe for an unhappy life ahead, believe me.
You are the one who can decide. You write down on a paper all the plus and minus points of both the papers, also find out from friends and all about the payments of both and write down. Now the main thing is in which subject will you be THE BEST, because when you are the best you get wonderful job opportunities with good payments, so whatever you do, make sure you are the best at it.
In my opinion if you must decide between the two you must first look at the prospects of the availability of jobs in the future and possible salary ranges in whatever career you decide to follow. The second thing that you have to do is really think about what you see yourself doing 10 years down the road from now. Just because you enjoy doing something no does not mean that you will enjoy doing it better.
The accounting degree will be a better bet in the short term to make money while you are getting a bachelors degree. Anything requiring a degree in Business Administration would require a bachelors degree and therefore your aa degree wouldn't help you any.
