I'm trying to set up a LAN connection in my home and have both CPUs with internet access all on a 56k Dail-up connection. I can't seem to get it to work the way I want it. I bought a router for Ethernet connection between the two systems and that seem s to work pretty well. The problem I am having is that the router won't let me connect to the internet on either CPU and plugging the phone line back into the CPUs only gives me access on one system while the other can connect to the internet but cannot connect to any pages. I can't get broadband or DSL or anything good where I live. I have been told that I should get another phone line installed. I need to have this set up and working by april 6th, as my wife and I are both starting online college courses on that date....Can anyone tell me how I can get this to work?

Get rid of the router and set up internet connection sharing on a PC connected to the dialup modem. Connect the 2 PCs with a crossover cable. Keep in mind, the main PC will need to be on and dont expect very fast browsing results because you just cut your speed in half going thru dialup! Save yourself and get DSL!
You can't connect a dial up modem to dsl or cable. You have to get an Ethernet card.
Normally the router actually directs packets to the internet through a direct connection to a modem. However 56k requires a computer to run the modem it is not standalone. So you must make your computer you have connected to the internet act as a proxy server. I believe in windows xp you can set up "internet connection sharing" to enable this functionality. The router will not do anything but connect the computers in this case.
The only way that you can get that configuration to work is to use on of the machines as a proxy server...
My suggestion is to get broadband as soon as it becomes available... then bundle your cable, internet, and phone on to one package in order to save money each month.
