PDF is A acrobat reader, are you sure your trying to open the correct format document?
please be a bit more specific - what are you doing when these characters appear?

Are you opening an existing word document
or
Does the default blank document contain strange characters?
or
When you type on the keyboard in word strange characters appear?

A little more information would be helpful...
Well you would have to be more specific as to the exact error
message that is being displayed. You should scan your computer for viruses and see what comes up. Next, you can try a repair or reinstallation of word.
