How would a 17 year old American boy secretly move to Europe?

Question:
Theoretical question. I'm writing a story for an online college course, and I need a character that runs away to a foreign country. He has to be American and he has to be under 18. I've already written that he would someday travel to Europe, so it has to be Europe. I'm trying to make it as realistic as possible, and it needs to be modern day. Can someone tell me some things he would need, things he would need to do, or at least point me in the right direction?

Answer:
Would be possibe to join a merchant ship crew. Then jump ship at convenient country. One in which he is able to speak language fluently. Then start a new life in his adopted country.
sneak on a boat
sneak on a plane
fake ID then buy plane ticket
teleport (after all its a book)
maybe you could read up on how that girl left the country to go see her boyfrined in the middle east. haha i mean that in all seriousness.
He could get a fake ID and apply for a job as a flight attendant. Stowing away on a plane (in the literal sense) seems virtually impossible nowadays. A ship seems like it would be easier to get onto, especially a cargo ship (but I don't really know much about ships.) Good luck with your story; it sounds rather difficult (especially if you have to stick to realism.)
Step One: Get a passport. See http://travel.state.gov

Get creative here on how he gets a passport without his parent's consent or chicken out and write that he already has one.

Step two: Let him hitch a flight or let him fly courier.

Travelling as a tourist for a US-citizen in Europe is pretty easy, even for a 17 year old, as long as he has got a letter of consent from his parents and money. If he doesn't have a letter of consent, he will have trouble finding accomodation. He will need to spent some time sleeping in tents in the countryside or do couchsurfing.

I am assuming your hero doesn't have a lot of money, so he will be stuck begging or working illegally. He will be seeing Europe from the bottom - the illegal immigrants, the winos and streetbums, the social welfare class, young punks in the streets, drug addicts, artists, the police picking him up for a runaway and placing him in foster care,...

He will sure meet a lot of interesting people!

I also suggest you let it end with him being deported back to the US, because he overstayed.

BTW, are you still looking for a beta-reader? I'm offering, because your project sounds really cool. I've beta-ed before for fanfiction projects and I think I could really help you to get your facts on Europe straight. Please email me at t_maia2000@yahoo.com if you are interested.
Easy.

All he needs is his passport and a plane ticket (which he can purchase online starting from $500).

Airlines rarely ask for a letter of consent if you are older than 16. If you are from the US it's very easy to enter Europe. Immigration officials will just wave him through as soon as they see the US passport.

Once he arrives in Europe, he would have to get a job working illegally (perhaps in a restaurant?). And if he outstayed his 3 month tourist visa he's be in trouble though.
Well, he can go to Romania. I don`t think anyone will ask him who he is as long he`s American, people there love Americans. And even if he`s 17, nobody will do anything about it, unless the American authorities come in. Good luck!
