How to become a teacher assistant?
Question:
do teacher assistant's usually work monday thru friday? what is the job description, what else can i do to better help me get into the career or have schools want to interview me or even consider me.
Answer:
It depends on what state you live in. I know for NYS that you need to take a state test that is offered a few times a year. Once you pass that then you must be hired by the school district. If you look up your state and you find the requirments.
As for prior experience I think that most schools would look for that, but I don't know if its required. Just like any job you have to sell your skills.
Good luck.
I believe You need credentials
Depends on the state where you live. Several require an associate's degree or to pass a test. You may expect to have to take additional classes if you don't have college credits.
Teacher's assistants don't make much money, but it is usually Monday through Friday. At my school (in Florida) they make between $8.00 (typical) and $10.00 (bilingual) per hour. I knew a friend who worked in Vermont and made $7.00 per hour while studying to be a teacher. Remember that most teacher's assistants or paraprofessionals get an hourly wage and not a salary like a teacher. This may mean that you might need a second job in the summer.
You will be more marketable if you have experience with special education students or are willing to work with them, or if you speak a second language (once again, depending on your location).
Usually your state's Department of Education (DOE) has a website with this information. Each state has different requirements, so it's sort of hard to answer your question without knowing where you live.
you need to go to your local community college and soeak to someone in the child development department. You can get you teaching cert., assistant teaching cert. Master teacher cert. and even yourA.A the units are basically what most places are looking for. Good luck!
