Is College becoming an unnecessary job prerequisite for most positions given the availability of information?

Question:
We live in an age of instant information where access to knowledge is no longer tied to institutions. A person can go online and download almost any book available. While its true that many positions require structure and guidance outside of the text ( Medical doctors, engineers, ect), it seems like many people have degrees in fields they never really work in. Is College becoming an unnecessary job prerequisite for most positions given the availability of information?

Answer:
The opposite actually
College will likely be the prerequisite for most any field
It is not just getting the information - it is understanding it
No. College isn't just about knowing a bunch of stuff you can find online. It's about proving that you can jump through all the hoops to survive college (i.e. write a knowledgeable paper, comprehend upper level literature, process upper level math, are responsible enough to complete college, etc).
It doesn't matter whether college learning is a requirement for a job.

if you were a boss, advertising a job, would you hire the college grad, or the high school grad if both would accept the job at the pay rate you specify.

that is why you need college, if you want job choices, you have to have what the other applicants have, or better, to compete.
