Question:
I have Verizon DSL at home, but I will be going away to college for most of the year. I am getting a Macbook, my question is how do I get online at home? Will any wireless router do? or Must it be that Mac airport thing? Can I just take the cable that allows my current home computer online and plug that into my Mac? I would only need my Mac to be online occasionally when im home...for school work and such. And I dont care that my other computer will be offline. So I definitely dont want to spend a lot for a router if I could avoid it. I dont mind 50-60, but Im not buying that airport thing unless i absolutely need to.
For home internet access on a Macbook will any router do?
Can I just swap the wire from my current computer into my Macbook and get online?
my current computer is an old Compaq if that matters
Answer:
You should be able to just swap the ethernet cable to your MacBook, try to go online, and you will either get online, or, after a while (wait for it) it will give yu a "Networks Dignostics" button, click that and follow the instructions.
Check that your Firewall, in System Preferences -> Internet & Networking -> Sharing is configured.
Hope this helps.
