How to get my Macbook online?
Question:
For home internet access on a Macbook will any router do?
Can I just swap the wire from my current computer into my Macbook and get online?
my current computer is an old Compaq if that matters
Answer:
Mac books will connect to your DSL the same way your Compaq computer connects. No additional purchases are required, unless you do not have a wireless router. Any router will work (I would recommend a Netgear wireless router with built-in firewall for added security). It should be no more that $60ish. New laptops either Apple or Windows, today come standard with a built-in wireless antenna.
Well from all the commercials I see your Mac should do just about everything automatically except turn it self on.
Most laptop computers have a RJ-45 ethernet connector that you can use a hardwire connection from your home DSL router/modem.
Some DSL routers/modems have built in wireless (don't know about yours). You might have to go into your DSL modem settings to turn it on.
You can get a decent Linksys router for about 60 bucks. Once your router is setup, your Mac should recognize the signal. Make sure that your wireless is turned on the Mac laptop or it won't work.
Using your current ethernet cable from you Compaq will work except your Compaq will lose its internet capability.
Getting a 4 port wireless router will help. It provides 4 hard wire ports so one can go to your Compaq and the wireless capability for your Mac.
