Do you think the prof. at Emmanuel College should have been fired?
Question:
Winset, 37, argued that the Catholic liberal arts school was stifling free discussion by firing him, and he said the move would have a "chilling effect" on open debate. He posted an 18-minute video on the online site YouTube defending his action.
The college issued a statement saying: "Emmanuel College has clear standards of classroom and campus conduct, and does not in any way condone the use of discriminatory or obscene language."
Student Junny Lee, 19, told The Boston Globe that most students didn't appear to find Winset's demonstration offensive.
Answer:
I don't think what he did was appropriate but firing him was way over the top. He should have been suspended without pay for 3 days and told that he had a right to express his opinion about something other than what he was supposed to be teaching but not in that classroom. They aren't paying him to express his personal opinions.
No, but he probably should have been reprimanded.
i didnt watch utube...
but thats stupid. either some influential alumni, a ton of students, or some other factors must have weighed in on that decision to fire the guy. another college should grab him up though.
discriminatory or obscene language? what am i missing here? if the statement just said that they didnt feel he acted professional.. at least i wouldnt be confused. students question things and think when they are shocked or offended------- i hope some students were. sounds like a decent prof. kept the kids awake in class at least. I was in college for sept 11th. some discussions were good ... some included ignorant comments from students... some discussions were boring.
It depends on how the policies are written, which I don't know, but they would have to be fairly strict to warrant firing after such an event. While some might have found it offensive, most professors offend some students, and punishing people for that is very Fahrenheit 451-esque.
