I'm a stay at home mom right now and wanna do some online college courses, whats a good college to go with?

Question:

Answer:
Bear's guide is a good resource. However, to check accreditation, just go to http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/search.a... If the school is not listed in their database, it is not considered acceptable to the U.S. Department of education.

Stay away from for-profit schools like University of Phoenix and Kaplan because of the high cost. University of Phoenix charges $494 per semester credit hour. Kaplan charges $305 per quarter credit hour, which is equal to $455 per semester credit hour.

f you are just starting your college education or have less than 60 semester credit hours, try your local community college first. They may have an online AA degree program. If they don't, try other community colleges in your state.

Once you have an AA degree, you can enroll in an online bachelor's degree completion program at one of the state universities. Many state universities now have online degrees. The following are some websites to get you started. Some of these schools have AA degrees online also.

Fort Hays State University – http://www.fhsu.edu/virtualcollege/...
Peru State University - http://www.peru.edu/offuttafb/degreeprog...
University of Wyoming – http://outreach.uwyo.edu/ocp/
American Public University – http://www.apu.apus.edu/index.htm...

There are many others. Also, you should look into credit by exam. A large portion of your general education credits for an AA degree can be achieved through CLEP and DSST exams. For information on CLEP, go to http://www.collegeboard.com For information on DSST, go to http://www.getcollegecredit.com...

There are also a few online forums that can help you get started. I belong to both and they are free. http://forums.degreeinfo.com and http://www.instantcertonline.com/forums...

Good luck
I am 8 months into earning my AAS in Business Management/Administration at Kaplan University. So far so good. They are a nationally accredited online university, but I must tell you, it is a very fast paced sink or swim kind of routine. At 305 a credit, you have to be self disiplined to stick with it...it can be tough at times.

If just a few random classes for self improvement is what you are going for, try looking into you local community college and see if they offer distance education.
Perhaps you could tell us what your major is. Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning is a good guide to online schools. You might surf the web, specifying degree level, major, and online/distance learning, like for example "master's - business - online" or "master's - history - distance learning" (or whatever it is that actually interests you) and you'll get plenty of options. If you're trying to figure out whether a school's any darn good, go to their website's accreditation page, find the name of their accreditor(s), then go to the accreditor web page(s) to see if the accreditor(s) list your prospective school as accredited. Then, in order to see if your accreditor(s) are any good, go to the websites of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) http://www.chea.org and the United States Department of Education (USDOE) http://www.ed.gov to see if either of these agencies lists your accreditor as a recognized accrediting agency.
