College placement test/ online classes?
Question:
is it possible to just take a college algebra class or is it required to take the placement test and get placed in a certain math before you can be allowed to take college algebra?
It depends. Check Collegeboard for more information...
Different colleges have different exepectations. However, most state universities and community colleges that offer online courses, along with those online specialist schools like Walden and Western Governor's, will require no on-campus presence at all.
As for testing out of algebra--often it's possible, but finding advanced math online will be tougher than finding basic college-level courses--there's less demand for the upper-level stuff.
Also, most of the time when you test out of a subject, you wind up paying more--frequently, you'll pay tuition for the course you're testing out of, plus a fee for the test itself.
Some colleges make you take placement tests for math, languages or english, but some don't. Call your school (most of them have a hotline where students can call and ask questions) about the college algebra class.
As for online classes, they usually have them in every subject area. However, they only offer a few and they fill up quick so you have to find out long beforehand what classes they will be offering for that particular quarter/semester. As for tests, some online classes make you take them online and some make you take them in person.
