Are degrees from online universities just as good as from traditional colleges?
Question:
Answer:
I would regard online universities as the absolute last resort for someone seeking higher education.
The quality of education these programs offer is minimal - there is simply no substitute for the kind of dynamic interactions and discussions that commonly occur in face-to-face college courses. Also, the quality of educator is significantly less at online universities - the best faculty choose to teach at real colleges and universities. Both the pay and work environments are far superior to online universities. So, for great classes from great instructors, go to a real college or university.
Also, because of the minimal training they offer, employers and graduate institutions place little value in degrees earned from online programs. Many of these programs lack even basic accreditation for the degree programs they offer.
Bottom line - you will receive little if any personal or professional benefit from online universities relative to what you could have received from a real college or university.
no. no no no no no. no.
no.
****************EDIT**********...
If you do not have time to go to classes, i urge you to look into an alternative program at a traditional college. many institutions offer online degrees, weekend college, or degrees which can be completed mainly online requiring only a few traditional courses.
NO NO NO. Please do not waste any time or effort on one. They are a sham, and most people will just laugh at them. Just do whatever it takes to get into a local univ. at least. There's more to education than just the piece of paper you get when you graduate. If you want to go to Grad school, you've effectively shot yourself in the foot - how can someone you've met only online write a decent professor recommendation for you?
Forget all the positives about it being flexible; education can be a sacrifice at times - make sure you do it right. Unless you had absolutely no other option, then I would stay away from it...
The previous two posts are a bit extreme but in general they are giving you good advice. Online degrees are not well regarded and while some institutions are accredited others are outright scams. Take care. Good luck.
Online degrees can be just as good as a degree from a traditional college. You just have to select the right school. Remember, there are many traditional colleges that have online undergrad and graduate programs. All you have to do is look for them. I would not suggest schools like University of Phoenix (or any other "for-profit" schools). For instance Drexel University (a good school in Philly) has undergrad and grad degree programs online. http://www.drexel.com/online-degrees/bac...
And the degree that you receive will be no different than a degree from their traditional programs.
i would not recommend an online degree at all. distance learning has its place in society. if you want to register at a community college and take intro to sociology or english 101 online, no problem. but when i see people coming out with full degrees from kaplan and MBAs from univ of phoenix...then it has gotten too far. really, the whole thing about college is reputation. these schools just dont have it. dont waste your money or time.
