Is it safe to order online with a debit card?
Question:
help!
Answer:
Ordering online can be safe if you pay attention to certain details.
Always make sure you are using a secure server, the website's address will start with https://
Read the Terms and Conditions carefully, know what you're buying and what your options are if the product is defective. (ie; some merchants do not accept returns)
Research the merchant, do they have any complaints or judgments?
Watch your balance. When you order online check your account balance frequently until the charge is debited. Keep checking your balance regularly for unauthorized charges.
One tip - Keep separate accounts for online use and regular use. You don't want to have your newly deposited grant check spent by the thief who got your card number.
as long as you use a reputable secure site designated by a lower case "s" at the end of the web address you should be fine. to give you some perspective on this think in these terms-every time you use your card "in person" the clerk has access to that number, expiration date, ect... so an unscrupulous clerk could do just as much harm without the internet. in fact i think it's more dangerous to fax the number considering the possibility of getting a wrong number, or the fax reaching the wrong hands.
