How old do you have to be to take college classes online?

Question:
I'm sixteen and a junior and i want to take some classes online.

how much might they cost?

Answer:
You're definitely old enough to start, I'm not sure about pricing though, might be cheap if you can get financial aid or a scholarship for starting young.
Check with a community college in your state. These will usually be the least expensive and they might have some good courses online.

If you can't find a good community college in your state with a class online that interest you, try Clovis Community College in New Mexico. They have online courses for $122 for a three credit hour course. That is less than $40 per semester credit hour. Probably one of the least expensive options in the country. http://www.clovis.edu/

You can also check out Independent Study at Lousiana State University. http://is.lsu.edu Courses are $229 per three credit hour course.

Just so you know, you will have to find a suitable proctor in order to take exams. Usually, a community college will have a testing center and they will proctor exams for you for a small fee. You can also check with your local library. They may proctor exams for you also.

Good luck,
I wouldn't bother taking classes at an online college...I checked out the University of Phoenix, and I don't remember the exact tuition charges, but it was more than 2x what my four-year university costs! Many community colleges allow you to take college courses while you're still in high school...ask your counselor if your high school participates in a program that will let you do this. All students have to pay for through the program where I live are books and supplies!

If you can't find online college classes, I would recommend taking Advanced Placement classes. If you don't want to take the A.P. test for college credit, you could take a CLEP (credit by examination) instead once you're in college, which is also cheaper. I earned 12 credits, which equal 4 classes, by taking the CLEP...they take about 1-2 hours and cost about $65 each, apart from what the school you take them at charges (at my community college, it was $15 per test).

Since the classes through my local partnership are free, I can only tell you what classes cost if you're enrolling as a regular student (before financial aid). I live in eastern CT...community college classes cost $418 each, and my 4-year state university charges $974 a class. However, only the community college offers online courses, and they are MUCH more generous with financial aid than a larger university!
