I want to become fluent in Italian?

Question:
The thing is though I don't have time to get into the car and drive to a class. So I thought I could join one of those online colleges and take some language courses from that (University of Phoenix preferably). Is this possible even though I'm just doing it because I want to not because I'm going to make a career of it? I already graduated college but learning Italian has always been a life long dream of mine.
So if it is possible, how do I go about it?
How much does it cost?
Developing fluency in a language takes time and dedication. If you don't have time to drive to class, how would you expect to have the time to immerse yourself to the degree necessary?

You will not develop fluency using an online course. You will develop fluency by speaking to real people, in real time, in an immersive environment.

You can learn the mechanics of Italian from a CD or book, but that is not fluency. Fluency is being able to understand and speak a language at something approximating the rate of a native speaker. Take an online class if you want, but combine it with talking with real Italians or spending time in Italy.

If you are extremely busy, my advice is to buy a CD (or check one out from a local library) and listen to it in your car on the way to work, or at home before you go to bed. Learn the basic grammar, structure, and sound of the language; then, find an Italian language club on, say, meetup.com (which is free). And then travel for a significant length of time in Italy, which could be of varying expense.

Then you will begin to develop fluency.

As for the University of Phoenix, I don't see that they offer Italian. Check for yourself here:

My own experience has been that Italian is a difficult language for which to find instructors. I found a private tutor myself, at a very reasonable price, for around $100 for 10 two-hour sessions. But that was a really, really, really good deal.

You might find a place near you that pairs English speakers with foreigners who wish to learn English. There are quite a few Italian immigrants who may wish to improve their skills.
Ciao whispering rose,

I share similar dreams...now, I agree with the previous answerer. Languages are all about exposure to the target language; the more often, the better.

How about trying exchange classes? You are taught Italian and you teach English in return. I have done it with Japanese and it is really fun (and free!!). You can meet anywhere you want and as often as you need (just remember the more often...). Is there any college in your town/city? that's a good place to look for people. Come on, give it a try!
