Is an online college degree worth anything?

Question:

Answer:
As others have mentioned, it needs to be accredited by the right government bodies. As for the respect and recognition you will get, it all depends on what the degree is. No matter what industry you want to work in, you need practical experience, you can't possibly get it all from theory. That's why you should really reconsider taking it if the degree is purely done through theory.

As I mentioned, you can have a degree or any other college qualification that is nationally accredited but there are certain institutions that are not as highly regarded as others when you are looking for work in that particular field. The beginning of my tertiary studies started with a certificate 4 in fitness at TAFE, which is an Australian college (not a university) with campuses throughout the country. At TAFE you can study for certificates, statements of attainment, diplomas etc, but you can't get a degree through them.

By doing my course through TAFE my qualification was highly regarded in the industry of personal training. There were other private institutions though that were not highly regarded even though they were accredited. This was due to a "get you in, get you out" express course, which was only 1/3 in duration with far less practical work placement.

The point of all this is, you first need to check if the degree is accredited and then do your research to check for quality, practicality and overall recognition by potential employers.

Hope I provided some insight here.

If it isn't nationally accreditted, usually it is not worth that much. Check for national accreditation and not just regional accreditation.
not really
