Tips and advice for an incoming college freshman?
Question:
Here are the details:
~Im not moving into a dorm, its an apartment that the college owns and rents out as a dorm: 2 rooms, 2 girls to a room, 1 bathroom. A kitchen and living area are there.
~Im moving across the country from NJ to California... so its gonna be hard to bring so some stuff.
~Im kinda messy but my roomies in the other room are posted online as being neat freaks... how will i get along with them?
Any advice at all would help from anybody in college or who recently graduated.
Thank you so much :)
Answer:
Wow, how exciting! That's a big change!
Ok, since you're traveling so far, I wouldn't bring a lot. Bring your favorite clothes, a computer (if you already have a personal one, otherwise you could always buy one there), and some memories from home (pictures, stuffed animals, any momentos that mean something to you). Pretty much everything else you CAN buy there if you need to. The shipping charges will be insane and you won't be able to bring a lot on the plane.
Do you have the phone number, AIM names, addresses or any info on the girls you'll be living with? Talk to them and see what they'll be bringing. Not everyone needs to bring a TV, frying pans, silverware etc. Figure out what they have, what they're willing to share, and then go from there.
Hopefully you'll be able to get along with your roomies. I think the best thing to do is set up ground rules the very first week you're living there. Figure out what's important to you and tell the others. If your pet peeve is hair in the shower, let them know! You will need to compromise and let some things go though, so just make sure you're telling them things that are really important. Let things such as "You said you'd be out of the shower at 8am but you weren't out until 8:02!" go. That's a minor thing. Use common sense!! Try to go with the flow, don't let things bother you and you'll be fine. Also remember you don't have to be best friends with your roomies, you just need to live with them and treat each ther with respect.
The first day of classes are a breeze. You'll get your syllabi and meet your professors/classmates. You'll probably have that one jerk who actually teaches on the first day, but for a lot of classes you'll be out quickly. Don't be freaked out by your syllabi. It looks like a lot of work, but it's for the whole semester!
Have fun!
Definately try to respect your roomates by keeping common areas clean. what you do in your room (as long as it doesn't cause creepy crawlers is your business).
set up some rules about vistors and noise
Things to bring: clothes, washing powder, quarters, snack foods (some dining halls don't stay open late)
Check the weather reports out there since you may be moving to a different climate.
Set up some agreements abotu food brought into the house, are you guys going to share or is everything individual.
good luck
Don't lose your syllabus! The first day of classes are pretty easy. You usually just get your syllabus, the professor goes over it and then you get released early.
Write the dates down for when you have tests and when assignments are due, you're professors WON'T remind you.
And you don't have to buy all of your books for the first day if you don't want to. In some classes you'll realize that you won't need the book at all.
Hope this helps. :)
Seriously, don't go to college. I just graduated with a degree in finance and can't get a job. I've been looking everyday for the past 5 fuc*ing months. One thing I now know is true, college is a huge waste of time and money.
