Bringing my laptop to my college classes and getting internet connection?
Question:
Answer:
get a usb wireless adapter for ur home pc .. get a wireless router for ur home .. 99% chance the laptop is wireless ready but take the usb wireless adapter with u just in case and ur all good ...
1. A newer model laptop should come with a wireless card, so that should not be a problem. Right-click My Computer>Properties, and locate the Device manager. Under "Network Adapters", you should see your network card.
2. Buy either a wireless router or an Ethernet router. Ethernet has more cables, wireless is more expensive. Both the laptop and the desktop probably have Ethernet ports (they look like big phone jacks). If you decide to use wireless, you will have to buy a card for your desktop. They usually cost $30-50.
For your home setup you need a wireless router. Desktop gets hooked up to router thru Ethernet cable in port 1 with modem hooked up to router to Wan port. Your laptop is probably already wireless capable. You need to talk to your college coordinator to get Key that you need to use to access their network.
if they have it at the school make sure your wifi is enabled but dont bring a wifi router from home that is highly illegal. If all fail ask the teacher. They might not have a brodcasted SSID
Almost all new laptops come with a wifi card or have it built in, and almost all colleges have wifi on campus.
But check with Dell

you didn't give the college
At home you need a router, almost all have wireless, under $50
you should be fine if there is a wireless card in your laptop. When you get within range there will be a pop up in your system tray...down by the clock that will ask you to choose a connection. Do so the only problem would be if the wifi connection is pass worded then you will need a password form the school's system administrator. Good Luck.
