Question about online colleges?

Question:
Which ones are legit. I live in missouri and I CANT go to college here right now. I have a baby that I have to stay home with. Plus no car right now as my husband is working constantly and he needs his car. Anyone know of any good accredited ones? thanks!

Answer:
Online schools are great for people in your situation and hundreds of thousands of people are currently enrolled.

They are great... if they are regionally accredited. Some are not and are academically meaningless such as Almeda, Kennedy Western, Warren National.

To gain regional accreditation, these programs have to have "highly qualified" faculty, primarilly with doctorates, which they do. There degrees will qualify you for employment for any organization with a competent HR department.

So Step one in your research is to verify that the university you are looking at is REGIONALLY ACCREDITED. You can verify the accreditation here: http://www.chea.org/search/

If you post your major, that would narrow it down, but Penn State has an online program, Arkansas State-Beebee, Peru State (Nebraska), DeVry, Baker College, just to start.
Check out Nova Southeastern University. It is a highly accredited institution with many college degree programs taught on-line as well as locally on their large beautiful campus.
North Central, and Empire State College are legit. ESC is also cheap, even if you are out of state. The work looks hard, though- I am a grad student seeking extra courses to compliment my degree, and I'm applying to ESC for these. I am already aware that it's not easier to do it online, except that you can be in your pjs. My friend went through Pace for his MS. Fantastic school, but costs a fortune. Also, he had a residency component, not sure what that's about.

Look for REGIONAL ACCREDITATION- that means

NO OTHER ACCREDITING BODIES ARE WORTH IT, DON'T GET SCAMMED! Some online diploma mills make up bodies so they seem legit- they are not. Beware of degrees based only on 'life experience,' they are fake. Also, cross check with the body to ensure they are being honest about their status.

U Pheonix is really expensive, so I'd say not worth the money.

Please don't make excuses for wanting to do this online. It's a fantastic way to finish while not ruining your life (you want to avoid that, I assume?) You are a grown-up and are looking to study rather than guzzle beer all day. That is admirable.

Can you tell us what schools you are interested in? That would really help. You must see recognition by one of the 6 bodies- even "Department of Ed" is not sufficient as grad schools don't accept all of these, and you never know what you will want to do. There are online master's degrees, too now!

Oh, one more thing: Don't get roped into doing continuing education. This is virtually worthless, and you can't use these credits for a degree.
Make sure you are aways from Phoenix University's online courses...
