Is a degree from an online college like univ. of phoenix really a degree or just another scam?
Question:
It it's an accredited school, it's just as legitimate as going to college. I've just finished an online college course - it's very different from actually going to classes, so it depends on how you learn and how much time you have. Online will save you the commuting time, and you can take things at your own pace, but it can be much more boring since you don't have other students to interact with. You'll need more discipline to keep yourself going back to the online course all by yourself as there's no one there to make you do the work.
In general, many employers do frown on online degrees. They frown on U of Phoenix degrees, online or off, more than most. So, if you can't attend a program on campus, at least do an online program that's tied to a reputable, offline university*. In that way, the good reputation of the offline program will trickle over to the online program. In fact, in most cases, if the school is relatively close to your home, employers won't even realise that you went online.
*BTW: That isn't U of Phoenix, or Devry, or ITT, or Kaplan, or Strayer, etc.
Some great universities that offer online degrees include:
University of Massachusetts at Amherst
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
University of Denver
University of Maryland
Duke University
Drexel
Carnegie Mellon
Penn State
Ball State
U Nebraska - Lincoln
Babson
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
University of Illinois
Penn State
Colorado State U
Savannah College of Art
Academy of Art University
And there are others. But in general, when you're looking for a distance learning degree, try to find a program at a school that has a good reputation for their "brick and mortar" campus.
So also look at your own state colleges, and, if an associates is what you want, also your local community college. You may be surprised at what they offer online/via distance.

I heard that U of Phoenix is not Accrediated but there are lots of online schools but I do not recommend you go to Baker College Online (nor their regular campus) either.
