Colleges online?

Question:
In your opinion what is the best online school you can go to? and really earn a degree and make sure people recognize it as one? I know it has to be accredited but what else? thank you. How do you check to make sure its not a rip off and how many complaints the school's had?

The question of whether it is accredited goes a bit deeper than that, as the next question should be: by whom are they accredited? Believe it or not, some schools actually create their own accreditors in order to accredit themselves. The first thing you should do is check the school's website and look at their accreditation claims. The next thing is to look at the accreditor's website to see if the accreditors acknowledge accrediting the school. The next thing to do is look up the websites of the United States Department of Education http://www.ed.gov and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation http://www.chea.org to see if the accreditors are recognized agencies. One final thing to know about accreditation is that there is regional accreditation and national accreditation. Both are equally legitimate, but the regional accreditors have been around longer and that, taken together with the fact that the national accreditors historically have accredited primarily short-term vocational programs before getting into accrediting academic programs, has led to the perception that the regional accreditors are more prestigious than the national accreditors. The regional accreditors are the Middle States Association, the New England Association, the North Central Association, the Northwest Association, the Southern Association, and the Western Association. The national accreditors are the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology, the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools, and the Distance Education and Training Council. Much of the publicity about "rip-off schools" comes when regionally accredited schools refuse to accept national accredited schools' credits or degrees either in transfer or as a basis for grad school admissions. As for complaints about schools, you can check the Better Business Bureau in the area where the school is located. Also, the acceptance of online degrees tends to vary by industry. For example, the computer industry and other tech-savvy industries tend to look favorably upon online degrees. Another possible tack, if the industry you wish to enter is less tech-savvy or otherwise might not look so favorably upon online degrees, would be to take your online degree from a "bricks & mortar" school that just happens to have an online program. Many of these (and you'll have to ask) make no mention on the diploma or the transcript of whether the degree was done online or "on-ground."
