In college, how do the online classes work?

Question:

Answer:
My college uses Blackboard for our online classes. We go to our college website and log into Blackboard and select which class we want to log into (based on the classes we registered for) using our student id and password.

The instructor posts assignments in a weekly folder. We purchase a textbook for the class with assigned chapters to read each week. We then have questions to answer via a discussion board and are expected to reply to two other people in class' responsibility. We're required to log in 5 days per week (out of 7), and some classes will assign a group project, term papers, and they even have quizzes/tests on-line.

The advantages are that you can be in class when you want to, as long as you complete the assignments by the deadline. Also, I learn a lot thru the discussion boards because it's nice to be able to read the person's postings. In a traditional class, you can't go back and reread what they've said.

The disadvantages: don't take this type of class if you need problems demonstrated to you. For instance, can you figure out stats on your own, or do you need someone to show you step by step how to solve the issue. If you need that visual assistance, I'd recommend taking the class in seat.
Another disadvantage, you have to be more self-motivated to complete assignments and although you can ask the instructor for clarification, you lose out on the verbal lectures.

Good luck in your decision.
You go to your host college that's the college you would attend physically, but can't. And they let choose classes from their class catalog. And you'll go on blackboard to class.(blackboard.com) There is alot more work in online courses.
It depends on the type of class. I love taking online classes because you can do them whenever you want. Ususally there are scheduled tests or assignments, but you don't have to sit through a boring lecture.
It depends on what university or college you go to. Some colleges use systems like BlackBoard. Essentially, you join a chat session within a program and have your lectures there. Your homework will be assigned online. Depending on how the class works, you may or may not have to ever actually meet the professor or any other students. Sometimes it's just 50/50. It's completely dependent on how the professor handles the class.
classes online is easy. you can work at home. you pay for the courses. the books are sent to you. and you do it online. without sitting in the classroom. you can be at home in your panties for all you care doing your work. theres also an instuctor on there to tell you what to do. also i believe theres other people on there to like a chat room i guess. good luck lil lady
Well I'm sure it varies by institution, what the rules and regulations are. I'm in Canada and the way it generally works here is this:

- Register for distance education (online classes)
- You obtain the necessary class materials, readings, notes, etc
- Depending on the kind of class you take, there may be assignments, quizzes, tests, etc. that you would need to take.
Usually though, if it's online it's hard to manage the logistics of that and so examinations are saved for the end of the course.
- Classes and components can vary, some may involve downloading streaming video of lectures, etc.
- You are reading essentially an entire semester's worth of material, work and research.
- You are sent by e-mail the dates and regulations for the online exam you must take.
- Take the exam and wait for your results.

The whole process is very independent, you set your own schedule, but some find it harder just because of the volume of material you are tested on. Also online classes tend to be a bit "harder" as they cover more material in the exam because of the absence of lecture time where things can be hashed out.
I've never really had an online course...but stats might require in class instruction. I HATED stats and to this day do not understand it.
