You might try searching at the book publisher's site. For example Prentice Hall has a student tab, where you can search by the author of the text. There are online resources to certain books with an access code. The code is usually in the back of the book, or whatever.
To find the actual passage, your best bet is to see if the college library has the book and you can borrow it. Even if it is on reserve and you can't check it out, at least you can then copy the pages you need and then return the book.
If you know the author and the title you could search it with a search engine, but I suppose you've already tried it. Perhaps you could add "free e-book", perhaps it takes you closer. If you know a couple of sentences from the book you can write them in the search engine, worth a try.
