Most people go to junior colleges to fulfill general education requirements, then transfer to a four-year college or university to get the education degree. And each state has different requirements for being a junior or high school teacher. In many cases you have to have the Bachelor's degree in Education and/or some subject area concentration. He might be able to substitute teach with only a two-year degree, but again it depends on the state where you live.
