I need to find good colleges or universities in the southeast that have great art programs?

Question:
that offer a bachelor of fine art degree

Answer:
The most popular one with the best reputation is SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). This is the school the art teachers in our area highly recommend to serious art students.

The answer to your question depends on many factors. First, are you interested in a specialized art college or a college that offers art as one undergraduate major? Do you just want to major in "art" or do you have something more specific in mind, such as majoring in graphic design, photography, interior design, etc.
Also, what else are you looking for in a college - do you care if you're in an urban area, or would you prefer a more suburban or rural school? Will you need financial aid? Do you want a large school or a small school? Finally, the all important question: how prepared are you for applications? What are your grades and test scores like? Do you have a portfolio of your work (more important for specialized schools)? These are all questions to think about and to answer, before you even begin looking for schools. For example, both the Savannah College of Art and Design (www.scad.edu) and The University of Alabama Birmingham (www.ua.edu) have excellent art programs, but they are very different schools. Depending on your answers to the above questions, one might be perfect for you, the other not right.

When you have answered the above questions, you may want to turn to the following resources to find quality art programs of all kinds.

The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits art programs. Although not all programs will have NASAD designation, if you see a school does have it you can be assured that they have met professional standards for art education. Here's a link to their website that offers a searchable database of college art programs that have met NASAD accreditation: http://nasad.arts-accredit.org/...

Second, you may want to use Peterson's directory of visual and performing arts schools to track down additional possibilities that meet your needs and desires. It is free to access on line:

Finally, an excellent resource to learn about art programs is to attend a National Portfolio Day. At the NPD, prospective art students can meet with representatives from numerous art programs, learn about what they offer, and get feedback on their portfolio's and admissions chances. You can find the dates for this year's NPD by doing a google search for "National Portfolio Day" putting the words in quotes as I did.

Good luck with your search!

The two best respected BFA programs in the southeastern US are the Savannah College of Art and Design (GA) and the Ringling School (FL). But both of these are art schools - not general universities. They focus entirely on art. If you prefer an art program within a broader university, these schools aren't a good fit.
