How legit are those online universities & colleges that bombard our emails and our webpages?
Question:
Answer:
You have to be very careful to check them out. A lot are not legit or accredited. Also, many of the legit ones may still require that you spend some time on the actual campus (up to 2 weeks a year) so if you go that route, read the entire online brochure so you know up front.
I would bet most of them are NOT accredited.
Do your homework and do not attend any institution of higher education unless it is accredited. There are four regional accreditation agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (http://www.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/i... There are many accredited colleges and universities that offer online and hybid (mixed format) courses and degree programs. There are also many "institutions" that are not accredited, where you run the risk of not qualifying for financial aid or acquiring a professional license after graduation. Even if an institution is accredited by one of the four regional agencies, certain programs may not be accredited by associations such as the American Psychological Association or the American Bar Association. Best of luck!
Most of them aren't authentic. A guy who works for the county where I live just got in big trouble for having an online degree.
