Question:
How does the Earth's magnetic field protect us from the solar wind?
What are three effects that 'solar storms' have on the Earth's Atmosphere and on man-made systems?
Answer:
The magnetic field deflects the very fast moving charged particles and either deflects them away from the earth or directs them along magnetic field lines to the poles. It protects the atmosphere from being blown out into space.
Solar storms cause the Aurora Borealis (northern lights). They can break power lines by inducing excessive current into them. They can disrupt or even knock out satellites.
