How far away is the nearest star to our solar system?

Question:

Answer:
4.22 light years: it is a Red Dwarf called Proxima Centauri and is part of the triple star system of Alpha Centauri. This is about 26 trillion miles away.

Proxima Centauri has been the closest star to the Sun for about the last 32,000 years and will be so for about another 9,000 years, when it will be replaced by Barnard's Star. (which is currently 5.96 light years away but as it is travelling very fast towards us will soon be 3.8 light years away),

Nothing lasts for ever. Polaris will not be the Pole Star for more than another 1000 years when it will be replaced by first Gamma Cephei and then Iota Cephei and then by about 14000 AD by Vega.
