I'd go with solar screens. Film will bubble, crack, and/or fade after a while.
It all depends on where you live and what you want to get out of it. Cooling your house and or cutting down on cost then it should help both of those issues. Will it pay for itself, depends on what exposure your windows are and the size of the window.

however go with auto grade tint you can buy it everywhere and it is easy to apply
I know it sounds strange but to apply use a spray bottle with 2 drops of dish soap the rest water to apply it gives you time to work with it then squeegee it out and let dry
oversize your film and them cut to fit after it has set
if you have insulated glass and any warranty left on them, tinting will void your warranty and there is a chance your seals will fail or glass will break. your best bet is tocall a reputable glas shop out and advise you.
