Solar storm in 2012?
Question:
I've heard many things about this date, but mostly, the scenario that a giant solar storm will hit the Earth, which such intensity that it will cause Earth's poles to shift/reverse, causing it to begin rotating in the opposite direction.
Could someone with some astronomy knowledge tell me; is this possible? Could the Earth's poles be reversed by a gigantic solar storm?

people have been saying the world is going to end since forever. Mainstream astronomers disagree with the earth poles shifting and flooding the world killing everyone.

Don't worry about it. Mars might get its polar ice cap back right afterwords.
Just don't invest in the carbon-offset industry, it could have a chilling affect on this market.
Better invest in the coming ice-age instead.
As far as the magnetic poles, they're held firmly in place by all the huge iron-laden SUVs in North America.
PS: The Earth is not an alternating current motor. We'll keep spinning in the same direction per Newtonian mechanics.
Scientists, have already proved through studies of geology that our magnetic polls reverse normally approximately every one hundred thousand years. yes the magnetosphere weakens near the time of change but not significantly.

Yes, it probably is coincidental about the Mayan calender, which didn`t really say the earth was going to end, but that a new era would begin. As for the solar storms, shifting the poles, I would have to do more research to answer correctly. now asbout the poles shifting, it has happened every hundred thousand years or so. It is thought that when or if it happens that there will be periods of gravity changes, along with earthquakes, tidal waves and other disasters caused by gravity changes. It is possible that for several hours,one might not even be able to stand up, then walk like you were on the moon.
The world will not end December 21, 2012.
Even if the seven-year tribulation period was to begin tomorrow (04/30/07), seven years would bring us to the year 2014. From the end of the tribulation period, the world will continue on through the seven last plagues and the Millennium (a thousand years), to finally be destroyed after the battle of Gog and Magog.

I haven't heard anything about this solar storm causing pole shifts. I did just blog about this the other day (see link below) and
I think it's just a coincidence. The solar flares aren't going to peak around December 2012, but in August, or possibly even in October 2011. Of course there's one nutball who claims the so-called "end date" of the Mayan calendar is actually October 2011 so he's probably doing a happy dance right now over the sunspot date.
Earth's poles being reversed by a solar storm sounds too good to be true.I doubt we would be lucky enough to see such a thing in our lifetimes...even so, like on answerer already said, Earth's poles are reversed every 100.000 yrs or so..and for the world ending in 2012: the world will end as we know it but not literally, the world will end metaphorically speaking.there will be changes that's all...what the Mayans meant is that we will enter a new age and that there will be changes..currently we are living in the fifth age and we will enter the sixth age in 2012
We are heading in to the plane of the ecliptic of our galaxy. It is a very dense area full of dust and when that dust starts hitting the sun then yes very bad things can happen. We are also lining up with the core of the galaxy at the same time and the sun will be at solar max. If the sun has to eat a lot of solar dust then it will be one heck of a solar max not seen in 26,000 years.
