What does it mean to abuse solar energy? We can't use it enough, IMHO.
It's used in many more ways than we realize. In direct ways, we use photovoltaic (photoelectric) panels to power things from calculators to road construction lights to (a very few) homes. Homes and buildings can also use passive solar heating (non-electric) to warm their water, or have rooms with large windows that face sunward to cut heating costs. Skylights cut lighting costs. There are also rare solar power plants that either use a field of mirrors aiming at a central boiler, or PV cells.
Indirectly, it is the power source that is behind the energy I get from burning wood or fossil fuels, eating food, even harnessing the wind, because all of those things store energy that ultimately came from the sun.

The main abuse of solar energy is when huge amounts of money are spent on systems that produce very small amounts of energy.
