Take a 55 gallon drum, paint it flat black, fill it with water and expose it directly to the sun. That, in a nutshell, is passive solar heat. You put that drum and several others in against a south facing wall and direct the heat into a building with fans and/or venting. Yes, there's more to it and you can use any number of different materials and strategies but that's the basics.
